Amethyst is the purple and lilac variety of the Quartz gemstone family.  Amethyst is the most valueable of all Quartz and is the most widely used in modern day jewelry making, followed by Citrine. The finest Amethyst comes from Russia, northern part of Asia. Other "fine" quality Amethyst can be found in Namiba and Zambia. We have also seen nicely colored Amethyst from Brazil.  

Fine, super dark Amethyst is also featured in the British Crown Jewels. It was a favorite of Catherine the Great & Egyptian royalty.  Amethyst was a favorite stone in the high ranks of the Christian church, called "the stone of bishops".
