Gemologist Assessment: Hue=Violetish Blue(bV), Tone=Medium Dark(6), Saturation=Strong(5), Clarity=Eye Clean(EC).  EC is the highest clarity level for colored gemstones, similiar to VS to VVS for grading diamonds.  

Tanzanite was first introduced to the market in 1967 by Tiffany and company.   The intent was to be an affordable, alternative to the "cashmere" colored sapphire gemstones.  Tanzanites quickly became a collectable stone, in it's own right.
